by Gerard J. Surprenant

They came from every walk those hearts, those heroes unparalleled

And purchased freedom for us all with sanguined valor.

For freedom has a price so dear, esteemed by we who live it,

Paid for by hearts and heroes' deeds with priceless blood and honor.

Monuments and markers tell where hearts and heroes fell.

Stoney tributes to their deeds, for freedom's price paid well.

The monuments and markers though plain enough to see

Cannot replace the homage to be given by hearts so free.
